The Sport Pilot Certificate is the quickest and least expensive way to get YOU in the Air. Half the time and cost of the traditional Private Pilot Certificate. Your Sport Pilot Flight Hours can be used towards transitioning to a Private Pilot rating if you so desire. Read more about becoming a Sport Pilot in the Flight Training / Sport Pilot Section.
The above quote is based on the FAA mandated 20 hour minimum; please keep in mind the average student takes longer to be proficient enough to successfully complete the Checkride. When researching flight schools, ask your instructor if in their experience a Sport Pilot certificate can be obtained in the FAA 20 hour minimum. If not, ask them to provide you a more realistic quote based on the average time they are seeing to get a student through the Sport Pilot Certificate. You will probably find it is closer to 30 hours. Also, inquire about other costs not detailed in their quote such as Ground pre/post flight instruction, instructional material, and associated test fees. I spend personalized time with my students after the flight lesson. I do not rush the student out to meet other appointments. The student will always have sufficient time to ask additional questions at no extra cost to them. Please evaluate your time and travel expenses when doing your comparisons.
