Born of Scottish and Irish descent in Washington, DC and raised in Winchester, VA the most frequent question I get is regarding my name Younis (yahn-iss). In the era of pen pals of the 1950’s my mother liked the unique name of one particular individual that she corresponded with and decided that would be her son's name. Now on to a little history about me.
At an early age, I had a great interest in auto mechanics. At the age of 16, I was fortunate enough to work for Pat Goodman (owner) of Goodman Engine. Pat was an excellent mentor in the field of Auto Mechanics. Some of you may remember Pat being interviewed in the late 1970s by “60 Minutes” regarding his “water-injection system”. Not much happened in Winchester so it was exciting when “60 Minutes” came to the shop.
During my employment there, Tom Schwietz, who is currently the owner of Aero Engines in Winchester, VA bought into the company. Some of you in the SCCA circuit may also know of Tom. During this time-frame, Pat, myself and Tom all decided to learn to fly. At the age of 19, I received my private pilot’s license at Winchester Regional Airport. The rest is history. My love of aviation began as a child and continues to grow to this day. In the early 1980s, I owned a 1966 Piper Cherokee 180 and also co-owed a Beechcraft Travelaire with Tom.
My job brought me to Maryland in the early 1980’s where I worked in the Information Technology field at Wang Laboratories. During the 1980s, I obtained most of my aviation ratings and at one point co-owned a Baron 58 with long-time friend Tim Emmart of Emmart Oil in Winchester, VA. It was at Wang Laboratories that I met my wife. We have a teen-age son in high school that shares the love of aviation as well. He loves travel and won the National Geographic Bee at his middle school, and went on to compete in the Maryland State Finals. My daughter was Salutatorian of her High School and is currently enrolled in college majoring in Environmental Science. After 16 years with Wang, in 1996 I went on to work for Montgomery College in Rockville, MD in the IT Department.
Forsyth Aviation was born out of a passion for general aviation and the desire to teach those aspiring to be pilots. We like to think of ourselves as a down-to-earth company acting with integrity at all times. Our customers are very important to us and we treat them as such. We do not believe in speaking negatively of our competition, whether big or small. There are a lot of fine Flight Schools in the area, do your research, ask the right questions and decide what is best for you.
I was a licensed Electrician in the state of Virginia at the age of 17. With an AA in Electronic Technology and my mechanical background, I not only understand aviation but the operation of the aircraft as well. I look forward to the opportunity to meet you!
